Where I can, as a way of supporting open source software, I participate in open source projects. It’s nice to see commercial companies making a concerted effort to invest and support open source software also. I have previously written about Fisheye.

Inspired by Amy Hoy’s article - How Tech Writing Sucks: The Five Sins, I decided to put pen to paper, figurately of course. I loved this article. It’s clear, amusing and sooooo relevant. I didn’t think it was possible to use “suckitude” in a sentence but she nailed it.
Being one of the tech-writing sinners, I tried to identify why. Here’s what I came up with.

You’re not radio-tagging me!
I first learned about the OpTag project from an article in the Guardian in 2005. Run by various European parties the OpTag project is funded by the European Union and “aims to increase the safety and security of air travel whilst maximising the utilisation of existing facilities”, according to the OpTag web site.
Sounds good so far, right? Well, until you learn how OpTag proposes to do this - by radio-tagging passengers! Yes, you got it right - radio-tagging!
