Fisheye grants open source license
Where I can, as a way of supporting open source software, I participate in open source projects. It's nice to see commercial companies making a concerted effort to invest and support open source software also.
Yahoo Widgets 4.0 update
I have previously written about Yahoo Widgets 3.1. Yahoo have released a new version, 4.0, of the widget engine.
One desktop not enough, how about 20?
Following the beautify-your-desktop theme, if you suffer from a cluttered desktop, let's face it who doesn't, and you haven't quite got around to either
a. Replacing windows with an alternative like Emerge Desktop
b. Adding widgets like Yahoo Widgets
this may be what the doctor ordered for all icon junkies.
How about trying out the following prescription, Dexpot 1.4?
Does cheap mean disposable?
Reading DVD player for £9 at ASDA in thisislondon.co.uk, this quote
"A DVD player is to go on sale for just £9, demonstrating that gadgets have now become as disposable as an old shirt and cheaper than a night at the cinema." caught my attention.
Is it part of the human condition that anything that does not cost us much effort to acquire is of no value?
Just because the DVD player costs less than the media it is playing, does not mean that if it develops a fault, it should be thrown away.
In these days of "Global Warming", wars being fought for natural resources and the ever increasing human population, shouldn't we, as consumers, be more focused on the real cost of products as opposed to the price tag?

Are you guilty of the five deadly sins of technical writing?
Inspired by Amy Hoy's article - How Tech Writing Sucks: The Five Sins, I decided to put pen to paper, figurately of course. I loved this article. It's clear, amusing and sooooo relevant. I didn't think it was possible to use "suckitude" in a sentence but she nailed it.
Being one of the tech-writing sinners, I tried to identify why. Here's what I came up with.
Yahoo widgets to beautify your desktop
Need a sight for sore eyes or do you just want to remove the eyesore that is Windows?
I wrote previously about Emerge Desktop as a replacement to the default Windows desktop. I have come across another tool to beautify your desktop, The Yahoo! Widget Engine.
To quote Yahoo:
"The Yahoo! Widget Engine (formerly known as Konfabulator) is a JavaScript runtime engine for Windows and Mac OS X that lets you run little files called Widgets that can do pretty much whatever you want them to. Creating them is very easy too."
The Widgets are self-contained packages that provide cool looking functionality for your desktop. I had used Konfabulator previously and just tried the Yahoo! Widget Engine 3.1.4 on Windows 2000 with Service Pack 4.
Fisheye exposes source code repository gems
Need to find out what's rolling around in your source code repository? I am assuming that you wouldn't be reading this if you don't know what a source code repository is or maybe you are just interested. But it is still only source code, lines and lines of it. You have to know what code has been submitted and where it has been stored to find it.
