Where I can, as a way of supporting open source software, I participate in open source projects. It’s nice to see commercial companies making a concerted effort to invest and support open source software also.

I have previously written about Fisheye and last month I applied for an open source licence for Fisheye by Cenqua for one of my projects. You can get a 30 day trial license, I got my first one Nov 2006, and just keep requesting a new one but that is a pain.

A number of days after I’d applied, to my pleasant surprise, sitting in my in-box was an email informing me that I had been granted an open source license.

As the saying goes, if you don’t ask you don’t get. Many thanks to Cenqua.

How do I apply?

To apply for an open source license go to http://fisheye.cenqua.com/ or an alternative is to use the free hosted service provided by Cenqua.

I have previously written about Yahoo Widgets 3.1. Yahoo have released a new version, 4.0, of the widget engine.

What’s changed?

Main changes are :

Better application performance consuming less memory

Better widget organisation with the new widget dock

Browse widgets within the application, no need for browser

Additional developer documentation available

And most of the existing widgets are compatible. All the widgets I use are and some have been updated by the authors.

Following the beautify-your-desktop theme, if you suffer from a cluttered desktop, let’s face it who doesn’t, and you haven’t quite got around to either

a. Replacing windows with an alternative like Emerge Desktop
b. Adding widgets like Yahoo Widgets

this may be what the doctor ordered for all icon junkies.

How about trying out the following prescription, Dexpot 1.4?

See Ref0

What is it?

“Dexpot 1.4 allows you to create and manage up to 20 different virtual screens for your monitor. It creates and manages virtual desktops and enables you to work far more efficiently and comfortably with many simultaneously opened windows on Windows 95/98/ME and NT4/2000/XP/2003/Vista.” (source - Ref0-Dexpot Site)

How does Dexpot work?

The application runs with an icon in the task bar which has a number of components including:

Desktop Manager: Presents and switches desktops.

Desktop Windows: For each virtual desktop, it displays a list of applications and their status.

Full-screen Preview: Just like Microsoft XP Powertoy, previews the virtual screens.

Settings: A dashboard which offers everything you need for full control.

Configure Desktops: Full configuration of desktops, how many, short-cut keys, screen resolution, background etc.

Desktop Preview: In case you want to know what’s up on other desktops.

Desktop Rules: This small but powerful module that helps to distribute windows.

So you’re thinking, “How do I get my hands on this lifesaver?” Fret no more!

Download Dexpot

Download a copy of Dexpot 1.4. See Ref1 for Dexpot 1.4 download and installation instructions.

Install Dexpot

Run the installer to set up Dexpot on your computer and follow the installation steps.

The recommended operating system to use is one of the following - Windows 95/98/ME or NT4/2000/XP/2003/Vista Beta (except x64).

Dexpot to the rescue

Then the Dexpot Icon should appear in the Task bar. Right click on it and configure your virtual desktops to your fancy. For instance, under the general settings option you can set Dexpot to start when you start your computer.

Enjoy being organised and having a sane desktop, or 20 sane desktops.

Is the medium to blame for people's crimes?

I couldn’t help noticing in the news this morning that in response to “Men jailed for online rape plot - BBC the UK government has decided to combat this behaviour by a Plan to list paedophile web names - BBC. The idea behind this is that all identified sexual offenders will give their online details to authorities. Given that even ordinary people when online

1. use many different aliases, not their real names.
2. use multiple email addresses, primarily to avoid spam.

do the authorities really think that this is a worthwhile exercise?

Now this approach would never be suggested, much less announced to the world in the context of a low-tech situation but it seems any crime perpetuated on the Internet (which is just a medium) is solved by building a database.

Would the same policy unit suggest that criminals be given a telephone number or web site to contact, to notify the authorities of their impending criminal activities? If banks haven’t solved the issue of money-laundering and government authorities can’t manage immigration, how is a database going to solve criminal behaviour?

The medium is not to blame here. It’s the criminals and their behaviour that should be addressed.

Also in the news, in a bid to make the internet less risky for children, the forth annual Net safety day marked worldwide today. The key statement in this article is “There’s a huge gap between what the children use technology for and what older people do with it,”.

So it’s people that make the internet what is it, not the technology.
