Too much information on terror plots?

10 August, 2006 by Anni Poulsen

As I’m following the coverage of the alleged, foiled terror plot here in the UK, I’m wondering if we are being given too much information.

Clearly passengers currently stuck at UK airports will feel that they are not given enough information. But I can’t help thinking that the more detailed information the general public is given, the higher is the risk for someone else to get inspired by the details of the alleged plot.

I realise that a lot of information is readily available to a potential terrorist via the internet for example, however, if anyone is actively searching for such information, they have probably already been inspired by something or someone else.

I’m certainly not suggesting that we are not kept informed, but to which level of detail?

I suppose the, in my mind justifiable, increasing lack of trust in authorities means that even on a day like today, when we are faced by a real threat, many people simply refuse to take what they are being told seriously. So of course a certain degree of detailed information is required in order for people to cooperate.

But where does the thin line between informing the general public and guarding public safety go? I don’t pretend to have the answer to that and am simply dumping my random thoughts on you.

Leaving you with that question unanswered, I’m going back to the live coverage.
