Lost luggage problem deemed unacceptable by EU

28 July, 2009 by Anni Poulsen

Touch wood, in my 20 years as an air passenger I have always received my luggage at arrival.

No such luck for 4.6 million bag owners travelling via airports in the European Union in 2008, according to figures provided by the Association of European Airlines (AEA).

One piece of luggage has been reported missing for every 64 passengers, estimates the European Passengers’ Federation (EPF).

Antonio Tajani, European Commission Vice-President in charge of transport called the number of bags mislaid, damaged or lost during European layovers “excessive and unacceptable”.

He continued: “In order to protect passengers’ rights adequately, we should provide citizens with the appropriate instruments. For the time being these instruments are not available.” (source)

The European Commission says it is currently considering ways to improve the situation. In the meantime, as I can’t provide a lost luggage horror story of my own, have you got a lost luggage story, you wish to share with us?
