Madrid Resources

9 November, 2006 by Anni Poulsen

These resources are meant as friendly tips about Madrid from one traveller to another, and are in no shape or form to be seen as expert advice.

They include information about how we got to Madrid, where we stayed and what we did.

Please note: You are free to download and use these resources for your private use only and at your own risk. While we take great care that the information on this site is correct and appropriate at the time of writing, we accept no responsibility for the result of how, where and when the information is used, nor for the result of using the information on any particular device.

Please do leave a comment if you have any questions or updates to the information below.

How did you get there?

Madrid was our first and last port of call in Spain - airport that is. We flew from Gatwick, London to Barajas, Madrid with British Airways (BA).

BA is increasingly becoming my favourite airline. Their staff are usually very friendly and provide a good service. A couple of recent free, unsolicited upgrades have tinted my glasses slightly.

We used Madrid as a hub to get to Salamanca in the west and Malaga in the south. On those journeys we used the fantastic long-distance bus network that Spain has created. Hand on heart I don’t use buses that often, but I have never come across such an efficient and convenient system anywhere in the world!

The journey to Salamanca was only 2 and a half hours with Auto-Res. You can read more about that journey in our Salamanca Resources article.

The journey from Madrid to Malaga took 6 and a half hours with Daibus.

Where did you stay?

We had our original hotel booking cancelled on us at the very last minute, and ended up staying at the Ibis Madrid Alcorcón TresAguas on our first night and Ibis Madrid Móstoles-Alcorcón on our last two nights.

I wish, I could recommend them, but they are just too far away from everything. Both are very cheap, but also very basic. I hope, I never have to stay at another Ibis in Spain again!

If you find yourself with no other option, the Ibis at Alcorcón TresAguas is slightly closer to Madrid and cleaner than the one at Móstoles-Alcorcón. The latter has a few restaurants and shops close by, but is opposite a petrol station and a McDonald’s. One night a big crowd of kids gathered at the back of the McDonald’s and made a right racket there till very early in the morning.

See the downloadable cue cards below under What Can I Download for information on how to get there, but again I really cannot recommend staying there.

What did you do?

We used Madrid as a hub to get to other places, but also spent 2 days there at the very end of our trip.

We spent the time there just walking around Madrid taking in the architecture and the atmosphere.

How did you get around?

In the centre of Madrid we walked everywhere and used the Metro to get to and from our hotel.

Where did you find information?

Before we left for Spain I had focussed mainly on finding information about our other destinations in Spain. So in Madrid we relied on our Lonely Planet.

I’m sure there are some fantastic web sites about Madrid, so if you know of any please leave me a comment below, so I know for next time.

What can I download?

Directional cue cards

These pocket-sized cards are designed for you to print and use for directions from A to B in situations where for whatever reason you don’t feel like bringing out a detailed map.

They are provided as jpgs in order to make it easy for you to download and insert in your favourite text-editor. I suggest you insert more than one cue card before you print your document. This way you save paper, but can still cut each individual cue card to whichever size suits you.
