Become a Volunteer at the 2008 Beijing Olympics

2 December, 2006 by Anni Poulsen

Do you fancy participating in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, but can’t quite make the athletic cut? Then maybe here’s your chance, become a volunteer.

If you were born on or before June 30, 1990 you can apply to become one of the 100,000 volunteers needed for the Olympics and Paralympic Games in Beijing 2008.

The application process has been opened since August 28 this year for Beijing residents, who are expected to make up the majority of the volunteers. December marked the enrollment opening for residents of other Chinese provinces and regions, and from March 2007 people who reside outside of China can apply.

You can find out how to apply by visiting the official web site for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The official web site is also where you find the full requirements for becoming a volunteer, however one important skill you must have is the ability to smile. Smiling is a very serious business in Beijing, so the “A smile is the best calling card for Beijing” campaign has been launched. The aim of the campaign is to remind Beijing residents and Olympics volunteers to smile at all these visitors, who are hoped will visit Beijing prior and during the 2008 Olympics.

Should the good people of Beijing find it a bit hard to find something to smile about, perhaps the news that “fifty-eight percent of all the tickets for sale will be priced at or lower than RMB 100″ (less than £7 or $13) might help.

Yes, it might even serve as an apology: “Sorry we tore down your house to make room for the Olympics, but here is a cheap ticket”.

How I wish I could approve your application, unfortunately I have no say in that whatsoever.

You should be able to get hold of an application form from your local Youth Leagues. Or you may visit the official Chinese volunteer web site for information in Chinese on how to apply.

Anyone looking for information in English on how to apply, should visit the official 2008 Beijing Olympics web site. But currently only mainland Chinese can apply.

Good luck with you application and let me know if you succeed.
