Fish and Chips off the menu

19 December, 2006 by Anni Poulsen

British food is not exactly renowed for its quality, but if there is one dish you must have when visiting Britain, it has got to be Fish and Chips, right?

Well, maybe not, or at least you need to be careful where you buy your fish and chips, according to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) – the environmental conservation organisation.

The North Sea cod stocks are now so low that the cod has made it on to WWF’s “Ten Things Not to Buy for Christmas” list (first published in 2004). The low North Sea stocks have already driven up demand for cod from places where the cod stocks are thriving, such as Iceland. Illegal fishing of the North Sea cod has subsequently become a problem.

Personally, I have no problem staying away from cod. I still suffer from vivid flashbacks of my childhood home being filled with the stench of boiling cod. But if you fancy sampling Britain’s most popular takeaway, the WWF recommends that you at least ask where the cod comes from, before you hand over your £3.20.
