Will we make it home for Christmas?
I’m one of the 3 million people who’ll be trying to make it out of Britain for Christmas. I’m putting stress on trying as the dense fog that has lingered over South England since Wednesday is causing chaos beyond belief at the local airports.
Mainly Heathrow airport is affected with British Airways cancelling 200 flights yesterday, 20 December, and all domestic flights today, as well as all flights to Paris and Brussels.
I’ll be flying from Gatwick tomorrow, which at the moment is only suffering from slight delays and a few cancellations. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it stays that way, because I’ll be very sad, if I don’t make it home for Christmas.
The British Airport Authorities (BAA) web site is currently down due to high volumes of traffic. So if you’re also planning on taking a flight out of Britain over the next couple of days, your best option is to check with your airline to see if your flight is still on.
Be warned, if you hear an all mother of a “nooooooooo” echoing over southern England tomorrow morning around 9, that will be me learning that I won’t be going home for Christmas!
Update: After an hour at check-in, another hour to get through security and a final sprint to the gate, we did make it home for Christmas. We arrived about two hours late, but who cares, we made it!
