Beijing to Lagos route opens
China Southern Airlines opened its new route Beijing to Lagos, Nigeria on 30 December. The Guangzhou based airline is currently the only airline that provides a semi-direct airlink between China and Africa (with a stopover in Dubai).
The route has been opened in order to “meet the needs of growing Sino-African diplomatic and trade ties and facilitate common development of the Chinese and African economies”, according to China Southern Airlines’ web site.
If my memory doesn’t fail me, I used China Southern Airlines to get from Changsha to Shenzhen in 1997, and didn’t have any complaints apart from one guy bringing a live chicken on board. Clearly the airline has moved on since then and are due to join the SkyTeam alliance in 2007, which will make it the first Chinese airline to join a global airline alliance.
