Public transportation at its cheapest

27 January, 2007 by Anni Poulsen

You may have your reasons for not wanting to use the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, I know it would be a moral dilemma for me, but I doubt price would be one of the reasons.

When I was browsing the Pilgrimage to Tibet guide yesterday, my eyes nearly popped out when I saw the price of a Chongqing -Lhasa ticket.

The journey is 3654 km long and takes about 47 hours, and get these fares:

  • RMB 335 for a hard seat (GBP 23, USD 46)
  • RMB 754 for a hard berth (GBP 49, USD 97)
  • RMB 1168 for a soft berth (GBP 76, USD 150)

So even if you went for the most expensive option, the soft berth, you’d be paying a measly GBP 0.02 per km (USD 0.04) - that’s right, GBP 0.03 per mile.

I hope, you’re paying attention to this Ken Livingstone!
