New Zealand on mudslide alert
New Zealand is facing the risk of an imminent mudslide according to The New Zealand Herald.
The water level of Crater Lake on the 2,797m tall volcano, Mt Ruapehu, has risen to within 1.5m of its maximum, and the surrounding dam wall could collapse within days sending a massive volcanic mudslide, also known as a lahar, down the mountain.
Local emergency agencies are monitoring the situation closely at Mt Ruapehu, and a warning system is already in place.
A diagram of the various warning levels and the Crater Lake’s current level can be found on Environment Waikato’s web site.
