Chinese Festival of Arts in Singapore

26 February, 2007 by Anni Poulsen

The Huayi – Chinese Festival of Arts is celebrated in Singapore from 23 February till 4 March this year.

Now in its fifth year, the festival was introduced by the Esplanade arts centre in 2003 as part of a program to “enable audiences across communities to find meaning and enjoyment in the arts.”

On the programme is theatre, dance, music and visual arts by Chinese artists from around the world.

Travelling Dreams by the Chinese Wang Yong Group is the event that initially caught my eye. The concert, which is on tomorrow, 27 February, is described as “an exciting soundscape that defies categorisation. Electric guitar, bass, keyboards, guzheng, pipa, ma-tou-qin, percussion, Mongolian vocals and more come together in this cross-cultural concert.”

But the festival has much more to offer anyone, who is in Singapore at the moment, just take a look at this selection:

  • A Touch of Zen - Shaolin martial arts masters meet Zen drummers (3 & 4 March).
  • Sa Chen Piano Recital (4 March).
  • Huangmei Opera Delights (2 & 3 March).
  • A New Bloom, A New Beginning - life-sized traditional Chinese floral cut-outs by Eric Chan (13 January - 4 March).
  • Outdoor Film Screening - Chinese movies at Esplanade’s waterfront (23 February - 4 March).
  • Family Puppetry - Tales by the Bay (23 February - 4 March).
  • Testing the Wife - Yu Opera by The Honan Opera Troupe of The National GuoGuang Opera Company Taiwan (3 & 4 March).

The above is just a small selection of events at the festival, visit the official Huayi - Chinese Festival of Arts website for the full programme.

How about the ‘Malay’ or ‘Indian festival of arts’? I thought singapore was a ‘multi-racial’ state?

    Hi Ed,
that is really a question you’d need to ask the Esplanade arts centre.

According to the Esplanade website the Huayi Festival is one of “three arts festivals that celebrated Singapore’s unique multicultural heritage and that sought to enable audiences across communities to find meaning and enjoyment in the arts.”

I have already asked the Esplanade what the other two cover and when they are on, and shall be happy to share that information here, if I get an answer.

However, as you are in Singapore, it might be easier for you to get an answer to your question, if you rang the Esplanade centre directly.
