Shanghai declares war on mosquitoes

28 February, 2007 by Anni Poulsen

Mosquitoes in Shanghai are likely to double in numbers this coming summer compared to last year, according to China Daily.

But Shanghai is not just rolling up its sleeves waiting for the sting. Shanghai’s public health promotion committee is asking locals to breed mosquitofish, which each can eat up to 200 mosquito larvae a day.

Like many other places in the world, Shanghai has had exceptionally warm weather over the past couple of months. As a result larvae can now be widely found at a time of year, when they are not normally found in Shanghai.

The mosquitofish, which was first introduced in Shanghai in the 1970s, is being reintroduced as an environmentally friendlier option than chemical pesticides.

According to Fishbase.org the mosquitofish is indeed effective in mosquito control, but has been found to “compete with indigenous fish and to upset the ecological balance.”
