Neral-Matheran mini train back on track

6 March, 2007 by Anni Poulsen

The mini train from Neral to Matheran in India (some 100km from Mumbai) is now running again, according to Hindustan Times.

The popular 21km line was reopened yesterday, 5 March. Major track repairs have been carried out since July 2005, when heavy rain washed away part of the track and the line was shut.

The train journey from Neral to Matheran takes just over 2 hours and runs past deep valleys, through dense forest and more than 200 sharp curves.

The hill station Matheran, which lies at an altitude of 800m, is a popular destination for those who want to escape the hustle and bustle of Mumbai. No vehicles are allowed in Matheran, so visitors can enjoy a quiet and virtually pollution free environment with fantastic views.

Originally opened in 1907, the mini train line will celebrate its centenary this year and officials are now pushing for the train to be included on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

I was asked today by Sunny for the departure times of the Neral to Matheran train. If you’re also looking for this information you’ll find the answer at this Indian Railways website.

I’d love to hear from anyone who’s had the pleasure to be on this train.

I’m afraid I don’t have that information. You’ll need to contact the Indian Railways.
