Celebrating Europe!

13 March, 2007 by Anni Poulsen

You might think that any European Union celebrations would only consist of political conferences and speeches. But in preparation for its 50th anniversary the EU has actually managed to put together a program of celebrations that might just attract a few of those travellers planning to visit Europe in 2007.Celebrating Europe logo

Don’t get me wrong, the celebrations do indeed include plenty of conferences and speeches, but here are 10 events that I would like to attend:

  • Denmark – “Romkugler” (a cake bun to die for) will be handed out in major cities on 26 March.
  • Estonia – Classical music concert in Tallinn on 27 March.
  • France – Europa Symphonic Show in Paris on 9 May.
  • Germany – European Night of clubs and museums in Berlin on 24 March.
  • Hungary – Street Festival in Budapest on 12 May.
  • Italy – Masterpieces of European art in Rome from 23 March till 13 May.
  • Lithuania – Newspaper exhibition retracing the life of a country in Vilnius on 29 March.
  • Slovakia – Beano dance performance in Bratislava on 9 May.
  • Spain – Concert at Plaza Mayor in Madrid on 23 March.
  • United Kingdom – Football match between Manchester United and all-star Europe XI in Manchester on 13 March.

The above are just a small selection of the many events celebrating the 50 years that have passed since the signature of the Treaty of Rome on 25 March 1957.

But with events planned around the world, the celebrations are not just restricted to those who can make it to Europe. Visit the official Celebrating Europe website for a full listing of events.
