Mudslide in New Zealand

18 March, 2007 by Anni Poulsen

More than a million cubic metres of water came gushing down the Whangaehu Valley in New Zealand around 11am local time today, following the warning sounds from the lahar warning sensors at Mount Ruapehu Crater Lake, according to local media.

Luckily there have been no reports of injuries, and while it naturally caused some damage, the lahar was not as severe as first feared.

As I wrote in our New Zealand on mudslide alert post back in January, New Zealand had been expecting the lahar for quite a while. Back then the water level of Crater Lake on the 2,797m tall volcano, Mt Ruapehu, had risen to within 1.5m of its maximum, and the surrounding dam wall was expected to collapse at any time.

The NZ Herald has published some photos of today’s lahar here.
