The fortress you saw is the Fortezza of Rethymnon.

Did you look for a history trail on the island, which enjoys some great links to antiquity ? I saw one fortress among the photos, maybe if you can date it it would be great.  Did you visit Crete after 2008 ? An update with present-day photographs would be fabulous.</description>
