Female Adder Basking in the Sun

16 April, 2007 by Anni Poulsen

I saw this female Adder on a walk yesterday in a forest near Fittleworth in West Sussex.

Female Adder

We’ve been enjoying quite summery weather here in southern England over the past few days, so she had come out to bask in the sun. I haven’t seen an Adder for years, which is not to say that Adders are rare to spot, but has more to do with my infrequent visits to forests.

The Adder is the only poisonous snake native to Britain and quite a “tame” one. It rarely bites, usually only when handled, and when it does bite, it rarely causes death, provided treatment is sought of course.

This one did not feel the need to attack and had already turned its tail on us, before I got my camera out, so I only have these slightly blurry photos to share with you.
