England turns yellow

4 May, 2007 by Anni Poulsen

When you visit England, do try to make it out of London, even if it’s just for one day, to pay a visit to England’s countryside. Despite the growing problem of littering and fly-tipping, it really is beautiful!

If you make the visit, one of the sights that will greet you is field after field of yellow rapeseed (oilseed rape).

It is an amazing sight and we’re seeing more of it. According to The Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) production of rapeseed oil in all of Britain has increased by 17% within the past year.

We’ve certainly noticed an increase down here in the south of England. When I moved down here 5 years ago, I would have to drive for a while to come across a rapeseed field. Now everywhere I look, I see rapeseed fields and my photo library for this year is already full of photos of yellow fields.

Biodiesel fuel and the launch of rapeseed oil as an alternative to olive oil are the reasons, why we are seeing more rapeseed fields than before.

Just one word of warning, when you go hunting for your Rapeseed Field Photo of the Year, bring your antihistamine – rapeseed does nothing for your allergies!
