Support the 5th Homeless World Cup

12 July, 2007 by Anni Poulsen

If you’re in Copenhagen from 29 July - 4 August, swing by the Town Hall Square (RĂ„dhuspladsen) to catch the action of the 5th Homeless World Cup.

Up to 500 players from 48 nations will be competing for the title. The aim of the tournament is to:

“[..] inspire and empower people who are homeless to change their own lives. We do this firstly by creating a world-class, annual, international football tournament; and secondly, by inspiring and supporting grass roots football projects working with homeless and socially excluded people all year round.” Source: Homeless World Cup website.

Even if you can’t make it to Copenhagen, you can still get involved via the official Homeless World Cup website. Join me as a member of the fan club or help ensure that teams from Liberia, Uganda, Zambia and Nigeria also make it to Copenhagen by giving a donation at the justgiving website.

If you’re not in a position to donate any money, then please help spread the word about the Homeless World Cup. Tell all your friends and family about it. Direct people to the Homeless World Cup website or if you have a website or blog, please display one of the Homeless World Cup banners similar to the one we’re sporting on this site.

I’m off now to the Homeless World Cup website to pick the team I’m going to support.

Background Notes:

The tournament is the brain child of Mel Young and Harald Schmied, who started discussing the idea back in 2001. Mel Young is also co-founder of The Big Issue in Scotland, a weekly magazine sold by homeless people for a cut of the profits.

Previously the tournament has been held in:

  • Graz, Austria
  • Gothenburg, Sweden
  • Edinburgh, Scotland
  • Cape Town, South Africa

and after Copenhagen this year, the tournament will move on to Melbourne, Australia for the 2008 Homeless World Cup.
