VSO provides checklist for would-be volunteers
I’ve already had my rant about travel agencies that capitalize on voluntourism (see: Volunteering Opportunities Without the Charges), but the renowned development charity Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) is now also warning would-be volunteers about fake voluntary schemes.
“Young people want to make a difference through volunteering, but they would be better off travelling and experiencing different cultures, rather than wasting time on projects that have no impact and can leave a big hole in their wallet,†said Judith Brodie, Director of VSO UK. (source: VSO website)
The charity has now developed a 10 point checklist with the aim of helping particularly young people weed out the travel agencies from the real voluntary schemes.
Check out VSO’s Gap Year checklist on the VSO website and while you’re there, I can highly recommend VSO’s real volunteering opportunities.
