Get Worldwide Flight Status

In the Christmas bliss I completely missed the launch of FlightStats’ global Airport Delays Map – a tool that would have come in handy as I was delayed coming back from my Christmas break.

The system behind the Airport Delays Map “monitors delays and cancellations at airports worldwide and assigns a “delay index” ranging from 0 (little or no disruption) to 5 (severe disruptions) for each major airport”, according to a statement released by FlightStats on 19 December 2007.

Travellers can use the Airport Delays Map to get a quick overview of the current status at any airports they may be using, and click through to detailed information about their specific flight.

For anyone unfamiliar with Flightstats.com, along with this new delay map, the site provides a set of very handy travel tools for flight status tracking, airport conditions and airline on-time performances.

Another tool is this Flight Ratings form, which allows you to look up the performance of a particular flight or airline. An easy way to root out the worst performing airlines before you book your flight.

FlightStats now also cooperates with Google Search, so that if you enter your flight number in the Google Search box, the top search result will feature FlightStats’ data with a link to more detailed information about your flight.

With all these tools as well as email and sms alerts and mobile access, Flightstats.com seems to go from strength to strength, and aside from being a superb site for travellers, I wouldn’t be surprised if it is also creating a new breed of plane spotters, or should I say trackers?
