Fancy sleeping in a container?
If you’re fed up with inflated London hotel prices, how does sleeping in a container grab you?
No, I’m not suggesting that you find the nearest container and bed down for the night. From June 2008 for the very affordable price of just £19 per room/night, you’ll be able to sleep in the new 120-room Uxbridge Travelodge hotel made up of container-style steel modules.
The containers complete with bathrooms and plasterboard walls will be shipped in from China and stacked and bolted on top of each other on site in Uxbridge, in a Lego style manner.
At an expected construction time of 25% less and cost of up to 10% less than those of a normal hotel, the container hotel is cheap and quick to build.
However, the rooms will include the same things offered in most other hotels, in fact we won’t be able to tell the difference, claims Travelodge.
Admittedly, Uxbridge is quite far away from central London. It would take you about 40-50 minutes on the tube to go from Uxbridge to say Piccadilly Circus. But at £19 per night, the hotel could certainly be a contender, if you’re just looking for somewhere to sleep for a couple of nights.
I personally think, it’s an interesting concept and Travelodge has high hopes for this type of hotel:
“It could facilitate the creation of hotels on a temporary basis to open in times of peak demand in certain locations - such as festivals or major sporting events”, said Paul Harvey, Travelodge’s Director of Property & Development in a statement released on 8 January, 2008.
You can read all about the container hotel on Travelodge’s website.
