Heathrow Terminal 5
More than 17 km of conveyor belts capable of moving more than 12,000 bags per hour. 7,000 parking spaces with sensor-led systems guiding you to free spaces. 30,000 m² of glazing granting you panoramic views of the airfield and London. 96 check-in kiosks. Rainwater harvesting and reuse of waste heat. Yes, we are of course talking about London Heathrow’s new Terminal 5 and the reasons why the British media is approaching self-oscillation.
Terminal 5 will be opened by Queen Elizabeth today, and will open for the first real passengers at 04:00 on 27 March 2008. Only British Airways’ passengers will get to use the new terminal, but if you don’t fly British Airways or just can’t wait to see the new terminal, here are a couple of links for you:
- BBC News 24 has made a tour of Terminal 5 available,
- British Airways provides interactive floor plans,
- and BAA provided all the facts used above, as well as a virtual walkthrough and a time-lapse video of the Terminal 5 construction.
Of course, regular readers of The Travel Cooler will know that ULTra vehicle is the real reason why I’m excited about Heathrow Terminal 5!
