Do’s and Don’ts in Nepal

20 March, 2008 by Anni Poulsen

Discovernepal.tv has published a short list of do’s and don’ts when visiting Nepal.

Travellers who have either been to Nepal or researched the country will already be familiar with most of the advice, but it doesn’t hurt to get reminded.

I, personally, was surprised by the advice not to drink from another person’s bottle. I distinctly remember an elderly Nepalese lady offering me a drink from her bottle of water on a busride from Kathmandu to Pokhara.

I politely declined as we still had a long way to go and her bottle was almost empty. She drank the water by slowly pouring it into her mouth without letting her lips touch the bottle, so perhaps it is not considered impure as long as you don’t touch the drinking container? At any rate it was one of those lovely gestures from a stranger that restores my faith in people, like only travelling can.

The Do’s and Don’ts list does come across as slightly lecturing, which is perhaps not the best way of getting their points across. The best presentation of such a list is the Do’s and Don’ts in Laos list published on the Ecotourism Laos website. Nothing like humour to get your point across.

Anyway, if you’re about to visit Nepal for the first time, have a quick look at the list on discovernepal.tv. You can also get a few tips in our View of a Local in Kathmandu interview and see a few photos from my trip to Nepal 17 years ago.
