Onboard a quarter full A320 - what a dream!
I flew from Madrid to London on an A320 that was about a quarter full on Saturday, and it took me right back to the good old days when flying was a pleasure!
I didn’t count, but I estimate that we were less than 40 passengers on the plane, which I believe can take in the region of 150 passengers.
With so few passengers, there was no sign of the usual pushing and shoving when boarding. We all had plenty of space for our carry-on luggage and plenty of empty seats in front, behind and next to us.
The crew was obviously a lot less stressed and generally the atmosphere onboard the plane was far more pleasant than usual.
Naturally you could argue whether it was environmentally responsible to fly with so few passengers, but as a passenger I have no control whatsoever over when an airline should or shouldn’t fly.
I suppose also with airlines’ obsession lately with reducing weight in order to reduce fuel consumption, airlines might argue that flying with a quarter-full plane is environmentally friendlier than flying at maximum weight? I’ve previously carried out rough calculations that show otherwise, but then I’m no expert!
What I do know, though, is that for the first time in years I actually enjoyed flying again!
