European Heritage Days in September

3 September, 2008 by Anni Poulsen

Lighthouses and coastal heritage in Iceland, Coins in Slovakia, 500 years of printing in Scotland, these are all themes of the European Heritage Days 2008.

Under the slogan “Europe, a common heritage”, 49 European countries will be celebrating the European Heritage Days on various dates throughout September.

The aim is to celebrate Europe’s cultural heritage by “putting new cultural assets on view and opening up historical buildings normally closed to the public,” (source: European Heritage Days website).

The annual event was officially launched in 1991 and is now a joint action by the Council of Europe and the European Commission.

According to the European Heritage Days website, all buildings that are open to the public during the event should fly the European Heritage Days’ flag. So if you spot a flag with the third logo in the screenshot above travelling around Europe in September, it means you can visit the building.

You can see a full list of events of all the participation countries, including dates and websites, on the European Heritage Days website.

On their website you’ll also find further information about the history of the European Heritage Days.
