How to prove to your credit card issuer that Sterling Airlines is no longer trading.

As I’ve written before, I filed a claim for my redundant Sterling tickets with my credit card issuer on 29 October providing them with all the required information.

Saturday I received a letter from my card issuer saying that they also needed a copy of the liquidator’s letter to prove that Sterling Airlines is no longer trading.

I rang them up and said that to my knowledge the liquidator had not made a letter available to the public, but that Sterling Airlines’ website clearly states that the airline has filed for bankruptcy.

The representative visited the website, while I was on the phone with her, and said that they would be happy to accept this as the liquidator’s letter provided I forwarded them a print-out of the Sterling website announcement.

While I was printing, I ran a quick search for the Sterling liquidator’s letter and found a referral letter proving Sterling’s bankruptcy from The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). The CAA recommends including their referral letter with your claim to your credit card issuer.

So if you also receive a request from your credit card issuer to prove that Sterling Airlines no longer exists, you can forward them either or both of these:

The CAA referral letter (PDF)

a print-out of the Sterling Airlines’ website statement.

When times are tough, you quickly learn who your friends are, and times must be tough in Iceland at the moment!

When times are tough, you quickly learn who your friends are, and times must be tough in Iceland at the moment!

So tough that in addition to the $2.1 billion emergency package approved by The International Monetary Fund (IMF) earlier this week, the Nordic countries Denmark, Finland, Norway and sweden have promised to lend a further $2.5 billion to Iceland.

A gesture that has not gone unnoticed by Icelandair. The Icelandic airline has just launched a marketing campaign specifically targeted at customers living in the Nordic countries saying thank you by offering a 25% discount.

The discount applies to Economy Class tickets for flights between the Nordic countries and Iceland as well as flights from Iceland to the US booked from 22 - 27 November, (see full conditions and terms on Icelandair websites).

Of course, Icelandair may already have had plans for the discount before the Nordic loan was announced, but even if it is just a clever marketing campaign, it is still bound to be a welcome offer.

The European Commission’s Blacklist of Banned Airlines, which lists all airlines that are currently banned from flying into the countries of EU, was updated today for the ninth time.

The European Commission’s Blacklist of Banned Airlines, which lists all airlines that are currently banned from flying into the countries of EU, was updated today for the ninth time.

Antonio Tajani, Commission Vice-President in charge of transport said:

“The blacklist is essentially a tool that ensures safer skies in Europe. Through this list Europeans and non-Europeans alike flying in Europe know that there exists a certain degree of safety on which they can rest assured.”

As I said back in July, while the airlines on the blacklist are banned from flying into EU countries, they are not necessarily banned in other countries. So if you’re in a foreign country outside the EU, I’d strongly recommend you check the list before you buy an airline ticket.

I've already made a claim for my redundant Sterling tickets with my credit card issuer, but the details of how to file a claim yourself have now been published by The Danish Consumer Council.

I’ve already made a claim for my redundant Sterling tickets with my credit card issuer, but the details of how to file a claim yourself have now been published by The Danish Consumer Council.

According to The Danish Consumer Council, Sterling ticket holders can file a claim directly with the liquidator by sending them a letter or email including these details:

your name and address

price of ticket

date of purchase

a copy of your receipt.

You can find the liquidator’s contact details on the Embassy of Denmark, London website (in English) and on The Danish Consumer Council website (in Danish).

Obviously, there are no guarantees that your claim will be successful, but it does at least provide some hope for those ticket holders who are not already covered through insurance or by either having booked a package holiday or paid by credit card.

As for my claim, I’m still waiting to hear from my credit card issuer. The good news, though, is that I’ve managed to secure a new return ticket for my Denmark trip with another airline.
